Display: Tennis Anyone?

Tennis Anyone? Display at District of Lake CountryTennis Anyone? Lake Country has a rich history of tennis dating back to the early 1900s. The display case at the District of Lake Country office illustrates some of this history. The first local tennis courts were built on the shores of Okanagan Lake across the street from The Store in Okanagan Centre. The clay surface was prepared with a large cement roller. A 1912 photo features Theresa Goldie sitting on the roller, holding her racquet. The lakeshore property was required for the Winoka Packinghouse so the tennis courts were moved south to the current grounds of the museum. Volunteers built and maintained the courts and a pavilion. Tournaments were often staged and a number of the original trophies are on display. Photographs of tennis courts at Gibson House, Hiram Walker, Jack Seaton Park, and the new Woodsdale Road location are included in the display.

Thanks to Karen and Glen Gibbons for reminding us of our past in this display in the lobby of the District of Lake Country Municipal building.
