Display: Celebrate Oyama

Celebrate OyamaThe newest display at the District of Lake Country is ‘Celebrate Oyama’. It features photographs of Oyama during the early years. One picture shows the main street, a gravel road, with the Log Cabin Tea Room, Smith’s Store, and Oyama Garage. The Oyama Community Hall, originally opened in 1914, is pictured. Plans are currently underway to mark the hall’s 100th anniversary. Parade photos remind us that Oyama Fun Days are coming up on June 1st, 2014. Artifacts on display include the Oyama Store Baseball Trophy, an Alex Phillips apple box label, and an original painting of Stokes Point, Oyama by D. Allison. Oyama’s historical highlights are presented on a timeline. Sample entries include 1875 – Vernon to Okanagan Mission Road completed; 1906 – Oyama name suggested by Barbara and Elizabeth Irvine; 1908 – Canal connecting lakes built; 1921 – Oyama High School opened.
