Each Flower: Up to 2.5 cm (1") across with 5 deeply-notched petals which narrow abruptly and form 2.5 cm (1") long tube at right-angles to blades. On looking into flower there appears to be a frill at top of tube; male and female flowers on separate plants; male flower has 10 stamens female flower has 5 styles; 5-pointed hairy calyx 2.5 cm (1") long, veined, and inflated; that of female flower becomes much more inflated as it matures; veins on that of male flower are purplish and fewer
Leaves: Opposite; lower ones lance shaped with stalks and blades up to 10 cm (4") long and 4 cm (1 1/2") broad; several pairs of smaller stalkless leaves up stem
Stems: Rigid, green, downy, and appearing jointed at opposite simple branches
Blooming Period: June - August
Habitat: Prolific in waste places, roadsides, and meadows
