Canadian Flag History Display

The latest display at the offices of the District of Lake Country illustrates the history of Canada’s national flag. Posters outline the evolution of the Canadian Red Ensign starting in 1871.

The Red Ensign served as Canada’s unofficial flag up until 1965, when the new flag was chosen. A selection of proposed flags from 1895 until 1965 is also displayed.

From the archives at the Lake Country Museum is a piece of music called The Best Old Flag on Earth written by Charles Harrison in 1914 in Vancouver. It is a patriotic song dedicated to the Canadian Overseas Contingents. The song refers to the Royal Union Jack flag, since the Red Ensign was never officially adopted by Canada. The music can be heard at this McMaster University website: Audio The Best Old Flag; the words can be seen at The Best Old Flag Lyrics.

This display was prepared by Karen and Glen Gibbons, volunteers at the Lake Country Museum, in July 2013.
