Each Flower: Large globular or goblet-shaped flower, 7.5-13 cm (3-5") across with 5 or more broad, thick, waxy, petal-like sepals; outer ones smaller and usually greener than inner ones which may be reddish-tinged inside; on looking into flower, top of stigma appears round and flat with radiating ribs and slightly scalloped edges surrounded by 10-20 tiny petals and numerous stamens
Leaves: Usually floating; several long, thick, round-stalked leaves; stalks mostly under water; large, broad, round heart-shaped and leathery blades are 23-25 cm (9-10") broad, usually floating but sometimes upstanding
Stems: Leafless, thick, smooth, round, and green
Blooming Period: May - August
Habitat: Sloughs, slow-running streams, and lakes at most elevations
