Each Flower: 5 pointed, outcurved petals up to 4 cm (1 1/2") long; 5 pendulous stamens with yellow or deep purple-red anthers; style terminates in 3-lobed outcurved stigma
Leaves: 2 basal spear-shaped, green, shiny leaves, one usually larger, 13-20 cm (5-8") long
Stems: Leafless, green above and becoming pinkish below; may branch into 1 or 2 flower-stems
Blooming Period: March - August, according to elevation as snow melts
Habitat: Open alpine and sub-alpine meadows, also at lower elevations on most mountains
