Each Flower: 4-5 cm (1 1/2-2") across with 3 broad, lance-shaped petals; 6 stamens surrounding 3 stigmas; 3 sepals similar in shape to petals but narrower and almost as long; flower stem 2.5-6.5 cm (1-2 1/2") long
Leaves: Often stalkless, broadly egg-shaped and abruptly pointed; may be 5-15 cm (2-6") long and up to 15 cm (6") broad; usually 3 arranged in whorl below flower-stem
Stems: Stout, unbranched, and leafless below single whorl of leaves
Blooming Period: March - May
Habitat: Streambanks and moist woods from low elevations to mountainous areas
