Each Flower: Large moccasin-shaped lip, 2-5 cm (3/4-2") long with small, roundish opening revealing purple-veined inside; petals and sepals greenish-yellow to purple-bronze; 2 lateral petals twisted; up to 4.5 cm (1 3/4") long and 1.3 cm (1/2") broad; upper sepal broader and a little shorter; 2 lateral sepals joined together and below lip; ovary elongated and ribbed; pointed leaf-like bract below flower
Leaves: May be several broad, pointed, lance-shaped, ribbed, softly hairy leaves, clasping stem, arranged alternately 10-15 cm (4-6") long
Stems: Rigid, slightly hairy, and may branch into flower-stems above
Blooming Period: May - June
Habitat: Bogs, swamps, and damp, mossy woods
