Each Flower: Up to 9 mm (3/8") long, urn-shaped with 5 lobes outcurved at tips; 10 short stamens; narrow, lance-shaped sepals half as long as flower; small, pointed bract at base of each flower
Leaves: Scale-like and narrow, lance-shaped and more crowded towards base of stem and brownish as plant does not need chlorophyll
Stems: Unbranched, fleshy, rigid, and reddish-brown, with very short, sticky hairs
Blooming Period: June - August
Habitat: Mostly in shady coniferous woods with deep humus, especially under yellow pine but also under fir, from lower to high elevations
