Each Flower: Up to 4 cm (1 1/2") across with tuft of purplish, tubular flowers surmounting almost globular involucre covered with green, hooked bracts, later forming brown burr
Leaves: Large, leathery; long stalks ribbed, grooved on upper side, covered with short, stiff hairs; lower blades pointed, heart-shaped up to 50 cm (20") long, 30 cm (12") broad; upper blades smaller, oval-pointed
Stems: Stout, tough, ribbed, rough with branches from leaf-axils
Blooming Period: August - October
Habitat: Waste places and roadsides
