Each Flower: Composed of 2 lips; upper one is hood-like, curved beak ending in curved spur enclosing style; lower lip 3-lobed, outer lobes wing-like; 4 stamens; calyx 5-toothed, deeply cleft at front and 7 mm (1/4") long; below each flower is ragged, green bract; beak very twisted
Leaves: Up to 7.5 cm (3") long, thin, many-toothed, alternate leaflets, giving ragged appearance; 4 or 5 diminishing in size up stem and many basal leaves, 7.5-10 cm (3-4") long
Stems: Rigid and reddish
Blooming Period: Late July - August
Habitat: Dry, open places on high slopes from just below to above timberline
