Each Flower: Up to 5 cm (2") across with reddish-brown disk about 2 cm (3/4") across and surrounded by 8-20 ray-petals usually deeply 2- or 3-notched; in some plants lower 1/3 of petals are reddish and veined. As flower matures, disk becomes larger. Involucre has several rows of green, pointed bracts
Leaves: Narrow and pointed, alternate and hairy on both sides; lower leaves taper into stalk and are about 10 cm (4") long; upper leaves about 6.5 cm (2 1/2") long and almost clasping stem; some may be irregularly notched
Stems: Rigid, round, hairy, and may be reddish above; may be 1 or 2 branches from leaf-axils; smells like chrysanthemum when crushed
Blooming Period: June - August
Habitat: Open, dry ground, grassy roadsides and fields in dry areas
