William and Matilda Clement were early pioneers in the Winfield area. They arrived here from Ontario in 1898 and Clement Road is named after them. Their son Ernest was only 15 at that time.

Ernest took up carpentry and in 1909 he married Margaret Whelan, the daughter of two other early pioneers from Ellison, George and Lucy Whelan. Margaret was also the niece of another notable Winfield pioneer, Thomas Wood.

Ernest and Margaret had three sons. Their firstborn was Leslie, who later, in 1931 bought the Eldorado Ranch store which was owned by Countess Bubna, daughter of the Duchess of Sutherland. The store was destroyed by fire in 1933 during the Depression at which time Les with his father bought the Winfield General Store. Later in the early 40s the Clement family built a cabin north of Carr's Landing wharf.

Ernest died in 1947 but Les took over management of the store which was also a post office and home to the first Okanagan Regional Library.
