« Photo Gallery | Gleed (James & Edith) Album

Jim Gleed arrived in Okanagan Centre in 1908, likely to examine the Westbury Hotel in which he had a financial interest (his sister, Sarah Rheam and her husband, Noel, owned and operated the hotel).

Gleed’s wife, Edith, immigrated in 1910. They built and operated the Okanagan Centre Store and Post Office until after WWII. Jim and Edith had two daughters, Ellen and Doris. Ellen married a Welshman named Baldwin and moved to Wales. Doris married Chris Phillips and they remained in Okanagan Centre.

The Gleeds were from Westbury, Shropshire, in England and on at least one occasion they returned and took many photos of that city. Jim had also worked in Nigeria and the collection includes photos taken in Africa.
